What We Do
The main focus of study for Stoccata Blue Mountains is the English Shortsword system of the 16th-19th centuries. Taking 16th Century English gentleman George Silver's 1599 treatise Paradoxes of Defence and his second treatise Brief Instructions Upon my Paradoxes of Defence as our pedagogical entry point, Provost Peter Radvan teaches Silver exclusively at Tuesday's Class. Silver’s system of single sword was taught at the inaugural lesson of Stoccata in 1998 and has been taught by one or more Stoccata branches continuously since then. It is probably the most heavily tested system taught by Stoccata.
Our Tuesday class will also place a strong focus on fitness, footwork and the subtle body mechanics vital to developing high level fencing.
As an adjunct to Silver, Peter will be teaching I.33 Sword and Buckler according to the 13th Century Tower Manuscript in future Terms.
